FAQ
Some frequently asked questions about our service.
Can Asseta replace QuickBooks for my family office?
Yes. Asseta is a purpose built family office general ledger platform designed to unify investments and accounting.
Asseta is built to replace QuickBooks for family offices that have outgrown single-entity accounting. Unlike QuickBooks, which was designed for small businesses, Asseta is a purpose-built general ledger and investment platform that handles the complexity of multi-entity, multi-currency family office operations.
With Asseta, you can:
- Integrate banking, investments, and accounting into one platform
- Consolidate across dozens of entities in real time
- Eliminate manual spreadsheets and workarounds
- Gain audit-ready books with family office–specific reporting
Can I build custom reports or dashboards?
Yes. Asseta includes a powerful custom reporting and dashboard builder. Users can create tailored financial reports using filters, custom groupings, calculated fields, and dimensional analysis themselves. Dashboards can combine multiple visualizations including tables, charts, and KPIs and be configured by role, entity, or user preference.
We also offer templates for common use cases like family office summary dashboards, GP/LP performance snapshots, and investment allocation breakdowns. Reports can be saved, scheduled, and shared with internal or external stakeholders.
Can I customize the chart of accounts?
Yes. Asseta provides a fully customizable chart of accounts to fit your entity structure, reporting needs, and financial workflows. You can add, edit, or deactivate accounts, create custom account types or subcategories, and structure the chart to match industry-specific standards such as for family offices, investment firms, or operating businesses. Changes are reflected in real time and can be managed across entities.
Can I export reports to Excel or PDF?
Absolutely. All reports in Asseta can be exported to Excel or PDF with a single click. Excel exports preserve formulas and formatting for further analysis, while PDFs are optimized for clean, professional presentation. You can also automate report distribution via scheduled exports to email or shared folders.
Can I import historical data?
Most family offices go live on Asseta within 8–12 weeks. The exact timeline depends on the state of your data, technology environment, and available resources.
From day one, Asseta’s team of CPAs, engineers, and customer success experts work alongside you ensuring a smooth migration, tailored configuration, and efficient onboarding so your team can realize value quickly.
Can different users have different dashboards and report formats?
Yes. Dashboards and saved reports are per‑user, and you control what data each role can see; C‑suite, AP, principals all see different views.
Can dimensions be required or enforced on certain transactions?
Yes. You can configure specific dimensions to be required based on transaction type, entity, or account.
This ensures data consistency and prevents incomplete or miscategorized entries.
The system will prompt users to complete missing dimension fields before a transaction can be posted.
Can family members themselves be partners/investors across multiple funds?
Yes. In Asseta, family members are first‑class dimensional objects, so they can be investors across entities and you can run per‑person statements.
Can principals get simple net worth statements (weekly/monthly) that roll up everything?
Yes. Net worth dashboards are standard and can be distributed by any time metric via email. Some clients run weekly snapshots for principals while staff work with real‑time data.
Can we allocate P&L by partner in real time as percentages change?
Yes. P&L can be allocated by partner in real time, even as percentages change, because the cap table is time-aware and event-driven.
How it works:
- Effective-dated ownership: Every ownership change (admission, dilution, secondary, reallocation) is recorded with an effective date/time.
- Continuous allocation engine: P&L is allocated across partners based on the ownership state at the moment the revenue or expense is recognized.
- No retroactive distortion: Historical P&L remains locked to the ownership that was valid at that time unless an explicit restatement is triggered.
Can we export or feed cleaned data back into other tools (e.g., Sift, Excel models)?
Yes. Cleaned GL data can be exported or pulled via API into tools like Sift/Excel without needing manual rework.
Can we handle omnibus structures where a fund allocates across 5–10 families?
Yes. Asseta models omnibus pools and uses dimensions to allocate to underlying client families daily.
Can we produce consolidated Balance Sheet /Profit & Loss / Cash Flow across all entities in real time with drill‑down?
Yes. Asseta produces real-time consolidated reports with click‑through from top‑level lines down to journals and source documents.
The platform can produce Balance Sheet /Profit & Loss / Cash Flow reports across all your entities with any dimension layered over the report.
Can we share static snapshots with principals instead of live data?
Yes. Some families get periodic PDFs or Excel exports while CFOs have live access; Asseta supports both modes and access can be granted anytime to any user with advanced read/write permissioning.
Can we slice and dice by family member, entity, asset class, property, etc.?
Yes. Asseta’s dimensional model lets you pivot by any tag (family member, asset class, geography, strategy, property) without exporting to Excel. Think of it as a pivot table on steriods.
Can we track and report on collections/passion assets (art, wine, jewelry, cars)?
Yes. There is a collections module (or near‑term roadmap) that tracks cost, FMV, insurance value, provenance, and location.
Can we track multiple funds and investor commitments/roll‑ups?
Yes. Funds are entities with investor dimensions. You can see fund‑level and investor‑level views without re‑implementing a separate fund‑admin system.
Can you build custom views for regulators or auditors?
Yes. Regulator/auditor roles can get narrow, read‑only reports with the dimension/period breakdowns they require.
Can you build customized account groupings (e.g., “operating hotels only”)?
Yes. Accounts can be grouped into custom report rows and filtered by dimensions (e.g., “only hotel properties”) and saved as templates.
Can you create net worth or performance dashboards for specific branches of a family?
Yes. Filters by family branch or generation are common; each group can have its own saved “G2 dashboard,” etc.
Can you drive cash‑flow forecasting off capital call histories in Arch/Canoe?
The near‑term approach is to surface historical call patterns and give clients tools to define assumptions, while being explicit that alt behavior is not fully predictable.
Can you feed data into Power BI or other BI tools?
Yes. Asseta exposes data via APIs/exports so external BI tools can consume it; this is part of the pitch versus Allvue + Power BI.
Can you handle non‑equity carry structures at the deal level?
The data model allows non‑equity “profit share” style allocations; some bespoke carry math still needs configuration vs a one‑click waterfall.
Can you integrate directly with custodians (JP Morgan, Goldman, UBS, Schwab, etc.)?
Yes . Direct custodian connectivity is being built out (JP Morgan, Goldman, UBS, Morgan Stanley, Schwab, etc.), with a 1–1.5 year horizon for deep tax‑lot feeds.
Can you model banking entities that constantly change ownership?
Yes. Asseta supports this and it's a known use case, and the cap‑table + allocation engine is built for frequent ownership updates.
Can you support GP/LP structures with carry, hurdles, and waterfalls?
Basic GP/LP ownership and allocations work today; full waterfall modeling is on the roadmap but not fully automated for every structure yet.
Can you track cost basis, realized/unrealized gains, and P&L by position?
For many clients, yes via integrated sources (Addepar, etc.); where you only have transaction streams, Asseta can compute gains/losses but isn’t yet a full portfolio accounting engine.
Do you integrate with Addepar and what does bi‑directional mean?
Yes. Asseta is a premier partner. You pull transactions and positions from Addepar and can also push reports/documents or summarized data back into Addepar.
Inbound (Addepar → Asseta)
- Positions, transactions, valuations, and reference data are pulled from Addepar.
- Asseta uses this as the source of truth for portfolio activity and NAV inputs.
Outbound (Asseta → Addepar)
- Asseta pushes derived outputs, not raw math:
- partner-level P&L and allocations,
- fund/entity rollups,
- reports and documents (e.g., capital statements, summaries).
- This keeps Addepar clean while reflecting Asseta’s calculations.
What “bi-directional” does not mean
- No circular overwrites.
- No competing valuation engines.
- Clear system-of-record boundaries.
Do you offer implementation help for custom configurations?
Yes, we support custom configurations during onboarding and beyond. Whether you need tailored reporting, a unique chart of accounts, or integration mapping, our team works closely with you to ensure Asseta fits your specific needs.
Do you replace a dedicated fund admin system like Backstop/FundCount?
Not 1:1 today. Asseta replaces the GL and much of the allocation logic; some firms keep an external admin for regulatory fund work.
Do you support crypto and self‑custody wallets?
We do not natively support crypto and self-custody wallets today. However, we do support a Coinbase integration. Self‑custody/wallets are handled via manual or CSV entries today.
Do you support multi-dimensional accounting (e.g. by fund, family member, asset class)?
Yes. Asseta natively supports multi-dimensional accounting, giving you the flexibility to track and report on transactions across any dimension that matters to your family office.
You can tag transactions and balances by fund, entity, family member, asset class, investment vehicle, project, or custom dimension. This enables you to slice data in multiple ways, run consolidated or granular reports, and drill down for deeper insights all without manual spreadsheets.
With Asseta, your accounting reflects the true complexity of your portfolios, making analysis, reporting, and decision-making faster and more accurate.
Do you support multiple books for an investment: cost, tax, FMV, insurance?
Yes. Multi‑book plus multi‑value is explicitly part of the investments roadmap and already used conceptually for collections.
Do you support multi‑year comparative reporting and budget vs actual?
Yes. Multi‑period reports (e.g., 5‑year trend) and budget vs actual by account/entity/family member are supported once budgets are loaded.
Do you support trust accounting and reporting by generation/beneficiary?
Yes. Trust entities and beneficiaries can be modeled, and reports can show by trust, by beneficiary, and across generations.
Does Asseta automate inter-company activity?
Asseta handles inter-company activity by automating transactions between entities within the same organization. Our platform simplifies these processes by providing tools to reconcile inter-company accounts automatically, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
Does Asseta integrate with Quickbooks?
Yes. Asseta integrates seamlessly with QuickBooks, in addition to many other financial tools. This integration allows for the smooth transfer of financial data from QuickBooks into Asseta, facilitating an upgrade path for businesses that need more robust features like multi-entity management and financial consolidation without losing their historical data.
Learn more about Asseta's integration partners.
How do you handle 50–250+ illiquid/alt positions and K‑1s?
Today: structured GL accounts and dimensions + data from providers like Arch/Canoe/Wellsite.
Longer‑term: automated PDF/K‑1 ingestion with AI powered document technology.
How do you handle intercompany transactions and eliminations?
Intercompany is posted as linked entries across entities and the system automatically eliminates those relationships in consolidated views without requiring a separate eliminations entity.
How long does it take to implement Asseta?
Our average customer goes live within 8-12 weeks. The timeline depends on the state of your data, technology needs, and resource capacity. Asseta's team of CPAs, engineers, and customer success personnel will work directly with you to ensure an efficient implementation.
Is Asseta GAAP Compliant?
Yes, Asseta is GAAP compliant. We’ve built the platform to support the principles and requirements of GAAP, including features like accrual-based accounting, audit trails, dimensional chart of accounts, and proper revenue recognition workflows.
It’s important to note that compliance also depends on how the platform is used. No software can guarantee GAAP-compliant outcomes without proper oversight. It is ultimately the responsibility of the finance team, including controllers, accountants, and CFOs, to ensure their data and processes align with GAAP standards
Our role is to make that process easier, faster, and more reliable.
Is Asseta SOC II Compliant?
Yes, Asseta is SOC 2 Type II compliant. We undergo independent audits to ensure our controls meet the highest standards for security, availability, and confidentiality. This includes rigorous practices around data encryption, access controls, system monitoring, and operational processes. Our compliance demonstrates our commitment to protecting sensitive financial data and maintaining the trust of our clients.
Please visit our Trust Center to see our compliance status in real-time.
Is Asseta a general ledger?
Yes.
A general ledger forms the basis of a company's accounting system. It documents all company transactions, such as assets, liabilities, equity, revenues, and expenses. Every entry includes a debit and a credit, which must always balance to maintain accurate financial records.
The general ledger plays an integral role in producing financial statements. It helps businesses track their financial performance over time, allowing them to identify trends, manage budgets, and make informed financial decisions. The general ledger also assists in ensuring compliance with financial regulations and standards, as it provides a complete and accurate record of all financial transactions carried out by the company.
